Learn more about how to navigate through South Station during construction.

Construction zones on Atlantic Avenue and adjacent to Track 13 were established in 2020, and the Tower Work Zone was established in March 2021. The train platform area has been expanded around the Tower Work Zone, providing access to all tracks. Passengers will need to use the new bifold doors near Tracks 1 and 2 to access the outdoor concourse and platforms.

Current Impacts:

  • The ramp and stairway located at Atlantic Avenue has reopened to pedestrians.

  • In February 2025, the Tower Work Zone (originally established in March 2021) shifted. New sliding door access is available between the terminal and concourse at the ends of Tracks 5-10. This marked an important milestone in the South Station Air Rights Project. The new concourse area and great space archways provide pedestrians with a weather-protected waiting space and an aesthetically pleasing experience. In the final condition, the new outdoor concourse will be 67% larger than the prior concourse area, transforming the area into an architecturally significant gateway to the City.

  • In place of the Tower Work Zone, the bifold doors between the terminal and concourse adjacent to Atlantic Avenue have been closed to establish the new work zone at the ends of Tracks 1-4. The reopened Atlantic Avenue entrance allows quick access to these tracks.

This graphic shows upcoming changes to the work zone. Beginning the week of March 17, 2025, the temporary infill tracks 7 & 8, highlighted in yellow, will be dismantled. In the weeks following, the temporary infill on tracks 9 & 10, highlighted in green, will be dismantled.

  • Construction of the new structure above the tracks is ongoing. Once completed, this structure will become the expanded bus terminal and parking garage.

Accessing South Station throughout construction:

  • Atlantic Avenue Entrance: The stairway and ramp located at Atlantic Avenue have been reopened to provide an accessible entrance to the public.

  • Summer Street Entrance: Access to the plaza from Summer Street is closed. To reach the train platforms and South Station from Summer Street, pedestrians should use the temporary Summer Street ramp and stairs.

  • Dorchester Avenue Access: Access to the South Station platform from Dorchester Avenue is available via a walkway between 245 Summer Street and the United States Postal Service building.

  • Bus Terminal Access: Access to the bus terminal will be maintained through the bus terminal entrance on Atlantic Avenue and also via the Track 1 platform.

  • Bicyclists: Once construction is complete, a new bike storage facility will be located in the new building accessible from the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk just south of the entrance to the train station.

All entrances to South Station will remain ADA-accessible.
