Construction Update - March 28, 2025

Sliding door access is now available between the terminal and concourse at the ends of Tracks 5-10 to accommodate the new work zones. The recently reopened Atlantic Avenue ramp and stairway provide further accessible access to the concourse.

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

Activity in Tower Work Zone

  • A new work zone configuration is now in place and includes sliding door access between the terminal and concourse at the ends of Tracks 5-10.

  • To accommodate the new work zone configuration, the bifold doors between the terminal and concourse adjacent to Atlantic Avenue have been closed. In their place, the Atlantic Avenue entrance has reopened with a new accessible ramp and stairway allowing quick access to Tracks 1-4.

  • The temporary infills at the ends of Tracks 7 and 8 (highlighted in yellow in the graphic below) have been dismantled. In the next few weeks, the area highlighted green at the ends of Tracks 9 and 10 will no longer be accessible to pedestrians. Passengers may see new construction fencing at the ends of Tracks 7-12, as the tracks are shifted into their final location.

  • Summer Street Plaza work continues behind construction barriers. This area serves as the main access point for Tower Work Zone construction. A uniformed police officer is stationed when the gate is in use.

  • The tower crane is currently in the process of being dismantled and will be removed from the site within the next few weeks.

The South Station Air Rights Project has reached an important milestone with the opening of the Great Space last weekend. The newly expanded outdoor concourse area, with archways, provide pedestrians a weather-protected waiting area and a new, aesthetically pleasing experience. In the final condition, the new outdoor concourse will be 67% larger than the prior concourse area, transforming the area into an architecturally significant gateway to the City.

  • Crews continue the light system installation in the Great Space.

Construction Update - April 19, 2024

Work has resumed after coordination with the appropriate agencies following a minor fire on site on April 9.

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

ACTIVITY RELATING TO THE OVERBUILD STRUCTURE

  • The overbuild structure supports the expanded bus terminal and currently covers Tracks 1-13.

  • Building enclosure work and interior fit out of the overbuild structure continues above the track level.

  • Crews continue night work in the railyard to install support for the platform lighting, PA, and Variable Messaging System, along with electrical conduit between various tracks. Crews are also installing spray-applied fireproofing, insulation, and metal panels in the railyard on weekends. This work may modify paths of travel at the ends of tracks during overnight hours.

    TRACK 13 WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • Crews continue metal panel installation, concrete column enclosure work, and platform lighting and PA installation at Track 13. Due to this work, Track 13 is occasionally out of service at night along with minor service impacts during the day.

TOWER WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • In the coming weeks, a work zone will be placed in front of Tracks 5 & 6 to allow for construction of the elevator shafts between the new South Station Concourse and Bus Terminal. This work zone will remain in place for the duration of the project. Access to Tracks 5 & 6 will be maintained.

  • Work in Summer Street Plaza continues behind construction barriers. This area serves as the main access point for Tower Work Zone construction. A uniformed police officer is stationed when the gate is in use.
