Construction Schedule

South Station Air Rights construction is expected to last through 2025.

Construction of the South Station Transportation Center, which includes the South Station rail terminal, bus terminal and an expanded parking garage, will be carried out in three stages

Stage 1 (january 2020 - March 2021):

In Stage 1, the Tower Work Zone was created and the temporary outdoor concourse area was completed.


Stage 2 (March 2021 - 2024):

Stage 2 work continues with construction primarily taking place in established work zones, such as the Atlantic Avenue Work Zone, the Track 13 Work Zone, and the Tower Work Zone. During construction, crews will continue to work as efficiently as possible to minimize impacts to the traveling public. See the Getting Around South Station page for how these activities will impact your path of travel.

  • The contractor continues to work on the expanded bus terminal and parking garage (which is being built over the tracks, platforms and outdoor concourse area).

  • The contractor has completed foundation work on the mixed-used tower. Tower structure work is ongoing.

  • Night work will continue on an as-needed basis to ensure public safety and to maintain the project schedule.

  • In the second quarter of 2024, the newly expanded bus terminal will be opened for public use with access from Atlantic Avenue through the existing bus terminal entrance.

stage 3 (JUly 2022 - 2025):

Stage 3 construction began once foundation work for the mixed-use tower was completed in July 2022. Work for Stage 3 includes the following construction activities. See the Getting Around South Station page for how these activities will impact your path of travel.

  • The contractor will complete the mixed-use tower.

  • The South Station Transportation Center will be completed in 2025, including the architectural enhancements to the outdoor concourse area and the new escalators, stairs, and elevators providing passengers with direct access from the train concourse to the bus terminal.

Please note that Stage 2 and 3 activities overlap.
