Construction Update - January 31, 2025

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

ACTIVITY RELATING TO THE OVERBUILD STRUCTURE

  • The overbuild structure supports the expanded bus terminal and currently covers Tracks 1-13.

  • Building enclosure work and interior fit out of the overbuild structure continues above the track level.

  • Crews continue night work in the railyard to install platform lighting, the PA and Variable Messaging System, plumbing piping, and insulation between various tracks. This work may modify paths of travel at the ends of tracks during overnight hours.

TRACK 13 WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • Crews have completed the majority of construction work adjacent to Track 13, including final paving. Remaining work, such as metal panel installation is ongoing. Due to this work, Track 13 is occasionally out of service at night.

TOWER WORK ZONE and Atlantic Avenue Activity

  • Stairway and ramp access between the station concourse and Atlantic Avenue is now restricted in order to construct a new permanent ramp and stairway. It is anticipated this restriction will be lifted as early as next week. For accessible access to and from Atlantic Avenue during this closure, please use the main entrance at the front of South Station at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Summer Street, or the Track 1 platform via the Bus Terminal entrance on Atlantic Avenue.

  • Later in February, the Tower Work Zone (originally established in March 2021) will shift. New sliding door access will be available between the terminal and concourse at the ends of Tracks 5-10. This marks an important milestone in the South Station Air Rights Project. The new concourse area and great space archways will provide pedestrians with a weather-protected waiting space and an aesthetically pleasing experience. In the final condition, the new outdoor concourse will be 67% larger than the prior concourse area, transforming the area into an architecturally significant gateway to the City.

  • In place of the Tower Work Zone, the bifold doors between the terminal and concourse adjacent to Atlantic Avenue will be closed to establish the new work zone at the ends of Tracks 1-4. The Atlantic Avenue entrance will reopen with a new accessible ramp and stairway allowing quick access to these tracks.

SUMMER STREET PLAZA ACTIVITY

  • Summer Street Plaza work continues behind construction barriers. This area serves as the main access point for Tower Work Zone construction. A uniformed police officer is stationed when the gate is in use.

ATLANTIC AVENUE WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • Crews continue to construct the remaining components of the building enclosure and foundations within the Atlantic Avenue Work Zone.

REMINDERS

  • Pedestrian travel routes will be maintained and clearly delineated at all times. There will be access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line.

  • Commuters traveling between the South Station Concourse and the South Station Bus Terminal are encouraged to use the Platform A walkway adjacent to Track 1 to bypass the Atlantic Avenue Work Zone.
