Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.
Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.
ACTIVITY ON TRACK AND PLATFORMS
The structure that will support the expanded bus terminal is currently under construction and covers Tracks 1-12. The contractor continues to place concrete on the steel structure and install mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services within the building.
The existing platform canopies are in the process of being removed during the overnight shifts. Crews are currently working to remove the remaining canopy over Tracks 10-11. This work should be completed in the next few weeks.
Crews continue to work at night in the railyard to begin fireproofing installation. This work may modify the paths of travel at the ends of the tracks during the overnight hours.
A second crane, located between the station and the Post Office (adjacent to Track 13), has been demobilized, and Track 13 is out of service. This fall, a smaller crane will be mobilized to complete the steel erection over Track 13.
In the Tower Work Zone, work continues on the concrete foundation for the tower. This concrete cap beam is expected to take 2 more weeks to complete.
Pedestrian travel routes will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated. There will be access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line.
ACTIVITY IN ATLANTIC AVENUE AREA
The smaller crane in the Atlantic Avenue Work Zone has been demobilized, and foundation work has begun. The crane will return to the site later this year to complete the steel erection during daytime hours.
Commuters travelling between the South Station concourse and the South Station bus terminal are encouraged to use the Platform A walkway to bypass the expanded Atlantic Avenue construction zone.
ACTIVITY IN SUMMER STREET PLAZA AREA
Work in this area is taking place behind construction barriers. This area serves as the main construction access for the Tower Work Zone. A uniformed police officer is stationed in the area when the gate is in use. Pedestrian travel routes will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated. There will be access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line.
