Construction Update - August 7, 2020

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON TRACK AND PLATFORMS

  • In the next few weeks, access to the northside of the platform adjacent to Track 1 will be modified to accommodate a temporary construction zone. To access the Bus Terminal and platform adjacent to Track 1, passengers will need to walk a short distance around the construction zone, using the platform between Tracks 2 and 3.

  • The contractor continues to perform work to shorten the tracks. Currently, Tracks 1 through 6 are complete, and trains on those tracks now stop approximately one coach length farther away from the sliding entrance doors to the station. This work will be continued on the remaining tracks throughout the summer. Once track work is complete in the fall, the sections of track no longer in use will be infilled and the outdoor concourse area expanded. This will provide increased space for passenger circulation and establishment of the Tower Work Zone.

  • Some of the digital displays in the outdoor concourse area have been removed due to construction activity.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON THE OUTDOOR OVERHEAD CANOPY

The contractor has been working at night to remove plaster from the underside of the overhead canopy that extends from the station entrance over the outdoor concourse area. Passengers may experience re-routing around temporary work areas at night.  In the next few weeks, as the canopy plaster removal operation nears completion, this work will transition into a removal of the canopy structure itself.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY IN ATLANTIC AVENUE AREA

  • During the next few weeks, passersby may notice demolition work near the entrance to South Station on Atlantic Avenue. Work will be performed behind construction barriers. Pedestrian travel will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated.

  • The Atlantic Avenue construction zone will be expanding in the coming weeks. This expanded zone will narrow the entrance to South Station from Atlantic Avenue.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY NEAR THE BUS TERMINAL

Overnight work continues at the Bus Terminal, where metal panels are being removed from the exterior, north face of the structure. The purpose of this activity is to accurately locate and survey the future tie-in points of the new expanded terminal into the existing structure.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY IN SUMMER STREET PLAZA AREA

  • In the coming weeks, access through the plaza from Summer Street directly to the train platforms will close in order to expand the construction zone. To reach the train platforms and South Station from Summer Street, pedestrians should use the new Summer Street ramp and stairs.

  • Other work in this area is being performed behind construction barriers. Pedestrian travel in this area will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated. Access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line will also be maintained.
