Construction Update - September 4, 2020

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON TRACK AND PLATFORMS

  • In the next two weeks, the station doors that provide access to Tracks 9 and 10 will be closing as the construction zone expands.  Passengers will need to use Doors 1-8 to access the outdoor concourse and platforms.

  • The contractor continues to perform work to shorten the tracks.  Currently, Tracks 1 through 6 are complete, and trains on those tracks now stop approximately one coach length farther away from the sliding entrance doors to the station.  This work will be continued on the remaining tracks throughout the summer. Once track work is complete in the fall, the sections of track no longer in use will be infilled and the outdoor concourse area expanded. This will provide increased space for passenger circulation and establishment of the Tower Work Zone.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON THE OUTDOOR OVERHEAD CANOPY

The contractor has begun night work to remove components of the overhead canopy that extends from the station entrance over the outdoor concourse area. Passengers may experience re-routing around temporary work areas while this work is being completed.  In the next two weeks, the contractor will begin to remove the canopy structure itself.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY IN ATLANTIC AVENUE AREA

  • During the next few weeks, passersby may notice demolition work near the entrance to South Station on Atlantic Avenue. Work will be performed behind construction barriers. Pedestrian travel will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated.

  • The entrance to South Station from Atlantic Avenue has narrowed due to the
expansion of the Atlantic Avenue construction zone.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY NEAR THE BUS TERMINAL

Overnight work continues at the Bus Terminal, where metal panels are being removed from the exterior, north face of the structure.  The purpose of this activity is to accurately locate and survey the future tie-in points of the new expanded terminal into the existing structure.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY IN SUMMER STREET PLAZA AREA

  • Access through the plaza from Summer Street directly to the train platforms is now closed.  To reach the train platforms and South Station from Summer Street, pedestrians should use the new Summer Street ramp and stairs.

  • Other work in this area is being performed behind construction barriers. Pedestrian travel will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated. Access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line will also be maintained.
