Construction Update - November 17, 2023

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

ACTIVITY RELATING TO THE OVERBUILD STRUCTURE

  • The overbuild structure supports the expanded bus terminal and currently covers Tracks 1-13.

  • Building enclosure work and interior fit out of the overbuild structure continues above the track level.

  • Crews continue to work at night in the railyard to install support for the platform lighting, PA, and Variable Messaging System, along with electrical conduit between various tracks. This work may modify the paths of travel at the ends of the tracks during overnight hours.

  • Crews continue to install metal panels in the railyard between the interface of the old and the new overbuild structures as well as between the Tower and the new Overbuild Structure.

  • Within the next few weeks, crews will begin spraying applied fireproofing installation outside the bi-fold doors at platform level. This work may modify the paths of travel during overnight hours.

TRACK 13 WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • Crews continue metal panel installation and concrete column enclosure work at Track 13. Due to this work, Track 13 is occasionally out of service at night along with minor service impacts during the day.

TOWER WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • In the Tower Work Zone, crews continue to construct the tower superstructure

  • Crews have begun to install the glass curtain wall on the exterior of the Tower.

SUMMER STREET PLAZA ACTIVITY

  • Work in the Summer Street Plaza continues behind construction barriers. This area serves as the main access point for Tower Work Zone construction. A uniformed police officer is stationed in the area when the gate is in use.

ATLANTIC AVENUE WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • Crews continue to construct the remaining structural steel, components of the building enclosure, spray applied fire proofing, and foundations within the Atlantic Avenue Work Zone.

  • Eversource is performing work outside the Atlantic Avenue Work Zone during the day, which may modify pedestrian paths around the site.

REMINDERS

  • Pedestrian travel routes will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated. There will be access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line.

  • Commuters traveling between the South Station Concourse and the South Station Bus Terminal are encouraged to use the Platform A walkway adjacent to Track 1 to bypass the expanded Atlantic Avenue Work Zone.
