Construction Update - January 27, 2023

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

ACTIVITY RELATING TO THE OVERBUILD STRUCTURE

  • The overbuild structure will support the expanded bus terminal and currently covers Tracks 1-13. Construction on the overbuild structure continues above the track level.

  • The contractor continues to place concrete on the overbuild structure and install mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services within the building.

  • Crews continue to work at night in the railyard to install supports for the platform lighting, PA and Variable Messaging System between Tracks 6 and 7. This work may modify the paths of travel at the ends of the tracks during overnight hours.

TRACK 13 WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • The contractor continues remaining structural steel, concrete, and masonry wall installation work over Track 13. Due to this work, Track 13 is occasionally out of service at night along with minor service impacts during the day.

TOWER WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • In the Tower Work Zone, crews continue to construct the Great Space columns and arches.

South station bus terminal

  • The parking exit booths on the roof deck of the South Station Bus Terminal have been permanently relocated. When exiting the parking area, you will need to circulate back to the main drive lane near the entrance gates to access the new exit booths.

SUMMER STREET PLAZA ACTIVITY

  • Work in the Summer Street Plaza continues behind construction barriers. This area serves as the main access point for Tower Work Zone construction. A uniformed police officer is stationed in the area when the gate is in use.

ATLANTIC AVENUE WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • A large crane within the Atlantic Avenue Work Zone is completing steel erection during daytime hours. The crane is expected to demobilize from the site around the middle of February 2023.

REMINDERS

  • Pedestrian travel routes will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated. There will be access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line.

  • Commuters traveling between the South Station concourse and the South Station bus terminal are encouraged to use the Platform A walkway to bypass the expanded Atlantic Avenue construction zone.
