Construction Update - February 17, 2023

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

ACTIVITY RELATING TO THE OVERBUILD STRUCTURE

  • The overbuild structure will support the expanded bus terminal and currently covers Tracks 1-13. Construction on the overbuild structure continues above the track level.

  • The contractor continues to place concrete on the overbuild structure and install mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services within the building.

  • Crews continue to work at night in the railyard to install supports for the platform lighting, PA, and Variable Messaging System between Tracks 8 and 9. This work may modify the paths of travel at the ends of the tracks during overnight hours.

TRACK 13 WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • The contractor continues remaining structural steel, concrete, and masonry wall installation work over Track 13. Due to this work, Track 13 is occasionally out of service at night along with minor service impacts during the day.

TOWER WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • In the Tower Work Zone, crews continue to construct the Great Space columns and arches.

South station bus terminal

  • The parking exit booths on the roof deck of the South Station Bus Terminal have been permanently relocated. When exiting the parking area, you will need to circulate back to the main drive lane near the entrance gates to access the new exit booths.

SUMMER STREET PLAZA ACTIVITY

  • Work in the Summer Street Plaza continues behind construction barriers. This area serves as the main access point for Tower Work Zone construction. A uniformed police officer is stationed in the area when the gate is in use.

ATLANTIC AVENUE WORK ZONE ACTIVITY

  • A large crane within the Atlantic Avenue Work Zone is completing steel erection during daytime hours. The crane is expected to demobilize from the site beginning Friday, February 24 through Sunday, February 26.

    • A temporary closure of two of the three travel lanes along Atlantic Avenue will be required to disassemble the crane boom, as well as the temporary closure of the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk adjacent to the work zone. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.

    • During this same weekend operation, parking along the east side of Atlantic Avenue will be closed between Kneeland Street and Essex Street except for a drop-off zone just south of the bus terminal.

    • Accessible pedestrian access to the bus terminal will be maintained throughout the demobilization of the crane.

    • Commuters travelling between the South Station concourse and the South Station bus terminal are encouraged to use the Platform A walkway to bypass the expanded Atlantic Avenue Work Zone.

  • This crane will be permanently demobilized, with a smaller crane taking its place at a later date.

REMINDERS

  • Pedestrian travel routes will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated. There will be access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line.

  • Commuters travelling between the South Station Concourse and the South Station Bus Terminal are encouraged to use the Platform A walkway adjacent to Track 1 to bypass the expanded Atlantic Avenue Work Zone.
