Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.
Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.
UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON TRACK AND PLATFORMS
The station doors that provide access to Tracks 1 and 2 are currently under construction. While they are being replaced, passengers will need to use Doors 3-8 to access the outdoor concourse and platforms.
The contractor has begun work on the platform adjacent to Track 1 (Platform A). While this work is being completed, the pathway along the north side of the platform has been slightly narrowed and will remain uncovered until the steel erection begins in January. The steel erection begins the process of covering the entire railyard.
The contractor has completed the work to shorten tracks 1 through 10.Trains on these tracks now stop approximately one to two coach lengths farther away from the sliding entrance doors to the station. The contractor will soon begin to infill a 50-foot-wide walkway across the railyard, utilizing portions of the sections of track no longer in use, which is the next step in expanding the outdoor concourse area. This will provide increased space for passenger circulation and establishment of the Tower Work Zone. Some minor adjustments to track infrastructure will be completed in the next two weeks at the ends of tracks 11 & 12.
UPCOMING ACTIVITY IN ATLANTIC AVENUE AREA
On Friday, January 8, a 370-foot-long crane will be delivered to the Atlantic Avenue construction zone. In preparation for the crane arrival, starting the week of December 28, the construction zone will be expanded onto the existing sidewalk. The existing parking lane in front of the construction zone will be repurposed for pedestrian use.
The contractor, working days and overnights, will erect the crane between Friday, January 8, and Sunday, January 10. This work will detour traffic along Atlantic Avenue, as well as close the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk adjacent to the construction zone. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.
Once erected, this crane will be used to construct a portion of the bus terminal and parking garage overbuild. During this period, the repurposed parking lane will be utilized for pedestrian access around the construction zone.
Stairway access from Atlantic Avenue to the outdoor concourse area is temporarily closed, as the Atlantic Avenue construction area expands. The ramp connecting Atlantic Avenue to the outdoor concourse will remain open.
