The following is an update to the Atlantic Avenue crane erection schedule, previously shared in the December 30 construction update advisory. The next project construction advisory will be sent on January 15, as scheduled.
During construction, crews will continue to work as efficiently as possible to minimize impacts to the traveling public. We appreciate your patience and engagement during this time.
UPCOMING ACTIVITY IN ATLANTIC AVENUE AREA: UPDATE TO CRANE MOBILIZATION SCHEDULE
On Monday, January 18, components for a large crane will be delivered to the Atlantic Avenue construction zone.
The Atlantic Avenue construction zone will be expanded starting the week of January 11 in order to accommodate the crane operations. The existing sidewalk will be shifted outward and the parking lane in front of the Atlantic Avenue construction zone will be repurposed for pedestrian use. This sidewalk shift is expected to be completed Friday, January 15.
The contractor, working extended days (12-14 hours/day), will assemble the crane’s boom from Friday, January 22, through Sunday, January 24. The crane is expected to be operational on Monday, January 25. The assembly of the crane’s 370’ long boom will require temporary closure of two of the three travel lanes along Atlantic Avenue, as well as temporary closure of the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk adjacent to the construction zone. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.
During this weekend operation, parking along the east side of Atlantic Avenue will be closed between Kneeland Street and Essex Street except for a drop-off zone just south of the Bus Terminal.
Accessible pedestrian access to the Bus Terminal will be maintained throughout the assembly of the crane.
The crane will be used to erect the steel structure for the new bus terminal expansion and parking garage overbuild. During this period, the lane formerly available for parking will continue to be used for pedestrian access around the construction zone.
