Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.
Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.
UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON TRACK AND PLATFORMS
The station doors that provide access to Tracks 1 and 2 are currently under construction. While they are being replaced, passengers will need to use Doors 3-8 to access the outdoor concourse and platforms.
The contractor has begun work on the platform adjacent to Track 1 (Platform A). While this work is being completed, the pathway along the north side of the platform has been slightly narrowed and will remain uncovered until the steel erection begins later this month. The steel erection will begin the process of covering the entire railyard.
The contractor has completed the work to shorten tracks 1 through 10. Trains on these tracks now stop approximately one to two coach lengths farther away from the sliding entrance doors to the station. The contractor will soon begin to infill a 50-foot-wide walkway across the railyard, utilizing portions of the sections of track no longer in use, which is the next step in expanding the outdoor concourse area. This will provide increased space for passenger circulation and establishment of the Tower Work Zone. Some minor adjustments to track infrastructure will be completed in the next two weeks at the ends of tracks 11 & 12.
UPCOMING ACTIVITY IN ATLANTIC AVENUE AREA
On Monday, January 18, components for a large crane will be delivered to the Atlantic Avenue construction zone. The contractor will begin to assemble the crane within the Atlantic Avenue construction zone on Tuesday, January 19.
The Atlantic Avenue construction zone expansion began the week of January 11 in order to accommodate crane operations. The existing sidewalk was shifted outward and the parking lane in front of the Atlantic Avenue construction zone repurposed for pedestrian use. This sidewalk shift is expected to be completed Friday, January 15.
The contractor, working day and night shifts, will assemble the crane’s boom from Friday, January 22, through Sunday, January 24. The crane is expected to be operational on Monday, January 25. The assembly of the crane’s 370’ long boom will require temporary closure of two of the three travel lanes along Atlantic Avenue, as well as temporary closure of the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk adjacent to the construction zone. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.
During this same weekend operation, parking along the east side of Atlantic Avenue will be closed between Kneeland Street and Essex Street except for a drop-off zone just south of the Bus Terminal. Accessible pedestrian access to the Bus Terminal will be maintained throughout the assembly of the crane.
The crane will be used to erect the steel structure for the new bus terminal expansion and parking garage overbuild. During this period, the lane formerly available for parking will continue to be used for pedestrian access around the construction zone.
Passersby may also notice demolition work in the Atlantic Avenue Work Zone. Work will be performed behind construction barriers.
UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON THE OUTDOOR OVERHEAD CANOPY
The canopy structure has been demolished, with the exception of a portion of a single beam that runs along the headhouse wall. This beam is being removed at night over the next few weeks. Passengers may experience re-routing around temporary work areas at night while this work is being completed.
