Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station. Daytime construction to create replacement Atlantic Avenue and Summer Street access ramps is a necessary step to establish the project construction zones. Overnight signal conduit work was completed on Tracks 3 & 4 last week.
Upcoming Activity in Atlantic Avenue Area
Construction of a new ramp on Atlantic Avenue, which will replace the existing ramp, is ongoing and scheduled to be completed this week. Once this replacement ramp is in place, the existing Atlantic Avenue ramp will be closed to expand the construction zone. Access to and from South Station from Atlantic Avenue will be maintained by the new, replacement ramp.
During the next few weeks, passersby may notice demolition work near the entrance to South Station on Atlantic Avenue. Work will be performed behind construction barriers. Pedestrian travel will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated.
Upcoming Activity in Summer Street Plaza Area
Construction to establish a new ramp from Summer Street to South Station is ongoing and should be completed by the end of next week. Pedestrian access to the doors entering and exiting the South Station headhouse toward the plaza area will be maintained at all times during this construction.
Beginning the week of June 15, the construction zone adjacent to Track 10 will be expanded. Passenger access through the Summer Street Plaza will remain open. Passengers heading to Platforms 10, 11, 12, and 13 will not be impacted except for a narrower platform width at the end of Track 10. Signage will be maintained for changes in paths of travel.
Upcoming Activity Near Track 13/Post Office
Demolition of the canopy adjacent to Track 13, within the construction zone, has commenced and should be completed within 2 weeks. This work will be completed at night during Track 13 track outages.
Upcoming Activity on Platforms
Beginning in July, the contractor will work to shorten the tracks, beginning with Tracks 1 and 2. When the work starts, trains will stop approximately one coach length farther away from the headhouse. Once the track work is complete in the fall, the tracks can be infilled and the outdoor concourse area expanded, which will allow for increased space for passenger circulation.
