Construction Update - March 11, 2022

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

ACTIVITY ON TRACK AND PLATFORMS

• The contractor is currently erecting a steel structure that will cover the entire railyard, which will support the expanded bus terminal. The new structure currently covers Tracks 1-12. The contractor will continue to place concrete on the steel structure, above the tracks, as it is completed.

• The contractor continues to install temporary lighting and public address system infrastructure under the new steel structure. In the coming weeks, these temporary systems will become operational, and the existing platform canopies will be removed during the overnight shifts.

• A second crane, located between the station and the Post Office (adjacent to Track 13), is erecting the east side of the expanded bus terminal. Due to this work, Track 13 is currently out of service for the next few months.    

• In the Tower Work Zone, excavation work continues, along with the installation of the remaining drilled micropiles. Customers may hear and experience vibrations from the work.

• Pedestrian travel routes will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated. There will be access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line.

  • The reconfiguration of the crane’s 370’ long boom requires a temporary closure of two of the three travel lanes along Atlantic Avenue, as well as a temporary closure of the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk adjacent to the construction zone, during the weekend work. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.

  • During the weekend operations, parking along the east side of Atlantic Avenue is closed between Kneeland Street and Essex Street except for a drop-off zone just south of the Bus Terminal.

  • Accessible pedestrian access to the Bus Terminal will be maintained throughout the reconfiguration of the crane.

• The lane on Atlantic Avenue formerly available for parking will continue to be used for pedestrian access around the work zone while steel erection work continues.

The next phase of steel erection has begun, and the structure (which is currently over Tracks 1-6) will begin to move towards Tracks 7 and 8. The contractor will continue to place concrete on the new steel structure above the tracks as the structure is completed.

• In the Tower Work Zone, the contractor is completing pre-excavation operations to support installation of the tower foundation elements, which will begin in August. This work will be entirely behind the construction barriers, but customers may hear the work and experience vibrations from it.

• The common platform has expanded around the work zone, providing direct access to all tracks. Passengers can use the new bifold doors near Tracks 1 and 2 to access the outdoor concourse and platforms. The other sets of doors are now closed. The contractor has also completed the infill of Tracks 1 and 2, further expanding the platform.

• Minor adjustments to track infrastructure at the ends of Tracks 11 and 12 have been completed. Future work to remove the overhead canopies located near the end of Tracks 11 and 12 will be completed at night.

  • The reconfiguration of the crane’s 370’ long boom will require a temporary closure of two of the three travel lanes along Atlantic Avenue, as well as a temporary closure of the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk adjacent to the construction zone, during both weekends. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.

  • During these weekend operations, parking along the east side of Atlantic Avenue will be closed between Kneeland Street and Essex Street except for a drop-off zone just south of the Bus Terminal.

• Accessible pedestrian access to the Bus Terminal will be maintained throughout the reconfiguration of the crane.

• The lane on Atlantic Avenue formerly available for parking will continue to be used for pedestrian access around the work zone while the steel erection work continues.

• Construction on the station doors that provide access to Tracks 1 and 2 is expected be complete on Monday, March 1. In their place, a series of bifold doors will provide better access to the outdoor concourse and platforms.

• The contractor has completed work to shorten Tracks 1 through 10. Moving forward, trains on these tracks will stop approximately one to two coach lengths farther away from the sliding entrance doors to the station. The contractor has begun to infill a 50-foot-wide walkway across the railyard, utilizing portions of the sections of track no longer in use, which is the next step in expanding the outdoor concourse area. This will provide increased space for passenger circulation and establishment of the Tower Work Zone.  Some minor adjustments to track infrastructure will be completed soon at the ends of Tracks 11 and 12.

• In the coming weeks, once track infill work is complete, the work zone near Tracks 9 and 10 will begin to expand. The work zone will be established sequentially over several months, beginning with the closing of Doors 7 and 8.  When the zone is fully established, passengers will use the new bifold doors to access the outdoor concourse and platforms.
