Construction Update - October 29, 2021

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

ACTIVITY ON TRACK AND PLATFORMS

  • The contractor is currently erecting a steel structure that will cover the entire railyard, which will support the expanded bus terminal. The new structure currently covers Tracks 1-11, and the metal deck covers Tracks 1-9. The contractor will continue to place concrete on the steel structure, above the tracks, as it is completed.

  • A second crane, located between the station and the Post Office (adjacent to Track 13), is now in place and operational. Track 13 continues to operate normally during the day but is closed each night between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM. The Track 13 overhead canopy, located between Tracks 12 and 13, is being removed, an operation that will take a few weeks. This work occurs at night.

A second crane, located between the station and Post Office, began operations in mid-October.

  • In the Tower Work Zone, the contractor has begun installing the tower’s deep foundation elements. This work will be entirely behind the construction barriers, but customers may hear work and experience vibrations from it.

  • Pedestrian travel routes will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated. There will be access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line.

  • Commuters traveling between the South Station concourse and the South Station bus terminal are encouraged to use the Platform A walkway to bypass the expanded Atlantic Avenue Work Zone.

    • The reconfiguration of the crane’s 370’ long boom requires a temporary closure of two of the three travel lanes along Atlantic Avenue, as well as a temporary closure of the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk adjacent to the construction zone, during the weekend work. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.

    • During the weekend operations, parking along the east side of Atlantic Avenue is closed between Kneeland Street and Essex Street except for a drop-off zone just south of the Bus Terminal.

    • Accessible pedestrian access to the Bus Terminal will be maintained throughout the reconfiguration of the crane.

Updated Atlantic Avenue Work Schedule - January 21, 2021

The following is an update to the Atlantic Avenue crane mobilization schedule, previously shared in the January 15 construction update advisory The next project construction advisory will be shared on Friday, January 29, as scheduled.

Crane assembly work within the Atlantic Avenue construction zone, originally planned to be completed from Friday, January 22, through Sunday, January 24, is being rescheduled by one week. The assembly will now begin on Friday, January 29. An updated schedule is outlined below. This schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.

  • During this weekend operation, parking along the east side of Atlantic Avenue will be closed between Kneeland Street and Essex Street except for a drop-off zone just south of the Bus Terminal.

  • Accessible pedestrian access to the Bus Terminal will be maintained throughout the assembly of the crane.

  • The crane will be used to erect the steel structure for the new bus terminal expansion and parking garage overbuild. During this period, the lane formerly available for parking will continue to be used for pedestrian access around the construction zone.

Construction Update - December 30, 2020

Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will continue daytime and overnight construction at South Station.

Please allow extra time (5 – 10 minutes) as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station. Trains might arrive and depart on a different track than what is typical. Be sure to check your track number before boarding.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON TRACK AND PLATFORMS

  • The station doors that provide access to Tracks 1 and 2 are currently under construction.  While they are being replaced, passengers will need to use Doors 3-8 to access the outdoor concourse and platforms.

  • The contractor has begun work on the platform adjacent to Track 1 (Platform A).  While this work is being completed, the pathway along the north side of the platform has been slightly narrowed and will remain uncovered until the steel erection begins in January. The steel erection begins the process of covering the entire railyard.

  • The contractor has completed the work to shorten tracks 1 through 10.Trains on these tracks now stop approximately one to two coach lengths farther away from the sliding entrance doors to the station. The contractor will soon begin to infill a 50-foot-wide walkway across the railyard, utilizing portions of the sections of track no longer in use, which is the next step in expanding the outdoor concourse area. This will provide increased space for passenger circulation and establishment of the Tower Work Zone. Some minor adjustments to track infrastructure will be completed in the next two weeks at the ends of tracks 11 & 12.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY IN ATLANTIC AVENUE AREA

  • On Friday, January 8, a 370-foot-long crane will be delivered to the Atlantic Avenue construction zone. In preparation for the crane arrival, starting the week of December 28, the construction zone will be expanded onto the existing sidewalk. The existing parking lane in front of the construction zone will be repurposed for pedestrian use.

  • The contractor, working days and overnights, will erect the crane between Friday, January 8, and Sunday, January 10. This work will detour traffic along Atlantic Avenue, as well as close the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk adjacent to the construction zone. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.

  • Once erected, this crane will be used to construct a portion of the bus terminal and parking garage overbuild. During this period, the repurposed parking lane will be utilized for pedestrian access around the construction zone.

  • Stairway access from Atlantic Avenue to the outdoor concourse area is temporarily closed, as the Atlantic Avenue construction area expands. The ramp connecting Atlantic Avenue to the outdoor concourse will remain open.

  • Passersby may also notice demolition work in the Atlantic Avenue Work Zone. Work will be performed behind construction barriers.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON THE OUTDOOR OVERHEAD CANOPY

The canopy structure has been demolished, with the exception of a single beam that runs along the headhouse wall. This beam is being removed at night over the next few weeks.  Passengers may experience re-routing around temporary work areas at night while this work is being completed.

Work in this area is being performed behind construction barriers. Pedestrian travel will be maintained at all times and clearly delineated. Access to CharlieCard validators used for the Fairmount Line will also be maintained.
