PROJECT LOOKAHEAD - WINTER 2021

As we enter the new year, we are excited to announce that the South Station Air Rights Project will begin to transition into Stage 2 of the construction schedule. Prep work has occurred since January 2020 to accommodate the following changes:

  • Beginning in mid-January 2021, a 370-foot-long crane will be erected within the current Atlantic Avenue construction zone. This crane will receive and erect steel deliveries to construct the bus terminal and parking garage overbuild. The establishment of the crane will take place over a weekend and will detour traffic along Atlantic Avenue. More detailed updates will be provided in the next several weeks.

  • Currently, the contractor is will soon start infilling all previously shortened tracks which will create a temporary outdoor concourse that is 22% larger than the existing area to accommodate pedestrians and rail passengers throughout the rest of the project’s construction.

  • In late January/early February, Doors 1 & 2 will be converted into a set of 5 bifold doors. Once completed, Doors 3-8 will be closed to accommodate the expanded, final tower construction zone (see more information on the Getting Around page). Once the tower construction zone is in place, the contractor will be able to perform foundation and structure work on the mixed-used tower.

The above changes can be seen in the construction sequence animation and the temporary conditions animation.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON TRACK AND PLATFORMS

  • The station doors that provide access to Tracks 1 and 2 are currently under construction.  While they are being replaced, passengers will need to use Doors 3-8 to access the outdoor concourse and platforms.

Graphic showing the construction zone around the doors that provide access to Tracks 1 & 2 needed to create a series of bifold doors.

  • The contractor has begun work on the platform adjacent to Track 1 (Platform A).  While this work is being completed, the pathway along the north side of the platform has been slightly narrowed and will remain uncovered until the steel erection begins in January.  The steel erection begins the process of covering the entire railyard.

  • The contractor has completed the work to shorten tracks 1 through 10.  Trains on these tracks now stop approximately one to two coach lengths farther away from the sliding entrance doors to the station.  The contractor will soon begin to infill a 50-foot-wide walkway across the railyard, utilizing portions of the sections of track no longer in use, which is the next step in expanding the outdoor concourse area. This will provide increased space for passenger circulation and establishment of the Tower Work Zone.  Some minor adjustments to track infrastructure will be completed in the next two weeks at the ends of tracks 11 & 12.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY ON THE OUTDOOR OVERHEAD CANOPY

The canopy structure has been demolished, with the exception of a single beam that runs along the headhouse wall. This beam is being removed at night over the next few weeks. Passengers may experience re-routing around temporary work areas at night while this work is being completed.

UPCOMING ACTIVITY IN ATLANTIC AVENUE AREA

Stairway access from Atlantic Avenue to the outdoor concourse area is temporarily closed, as the Atlantic Avenue construction area expands.  The ramp connecting Atlantic Avenue to the outdoor concourse will remain open.

South Station Air Rights Project Construction Anticipated to Restart on May 18

Work on the South Station Air Rights Project is planned to resume on May 18.  Once the schedule impacts of the COVID-19 delays can be determined, a new construction timeline will be established.

Please note that Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, and its subcontractors will be maintaining full compliance with the City of Boston’s COVID-19 Safety Policies to ensure the safety of not only work crews but members of the traveling public.

Construction Paused and Bike Storage Relocation

Construction Pausing on South Station Air Rights Project due to Coronavirus

On March 16, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh ordered construction projects in the City to be shut down for at least the next two weeks in response to the coronavirus outbreak.  The South Station Air Rights project team will take every measure necessary as designated by the Mayor and Governor. This is a time when many individuals and businesses must make sacrifices for the safety of our community, and we will do our part.  We will continue to provide updates on the project and announce when construction resumes.

Bike Facility Closing on Friday, March 27

In anticipation of construction resuming, the MBTA Pedal and Park facility located on Atlantic Avenue will be closing at noon on Friday, March 27, 2020.   New bicycle racks are currently available near the existing Blue Bikes facility, along the east side of Atlantic Avenue, adjacent to South Station. In the spring, a new Pedal and Park facility will be open in a nearby location.  A notice will be sent once that facility is open.

Once construction is complete, the new bike storage facility will be located in the expanded South Station Transportation Center, accessible from the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk just south of the entrance to the train station.

All bicycles in the existing Pedal and Park facility on Atlantic Avenue must be removed by noon on Friday, March 27.  If a bike is removed, the owner would need to contact the Transit Police at 617-222-1212. Owners will have 30 days to retrieve their bikes.

Track 13 and Upcoming Construction Activity

Track 13 Changes

Beginning March 2, through the completion of South Station Transportation Center Improvement Project, all trains boarding on Track 13 will be accessible only on the west side of the platform, closest to Track 12. The east side of the platform, closest to the Post Office, will be closed as part of the construction zone.

Upcoming Construction Activity

This week, a fenced-in work zone will be put in place between 245 Summer Street and South Station.  Within the work zone, patio pavers and benches will be removed, stored, and reinstalled once the project has been completed.  Access through the plaza will be maintained.

The existing MBTA bus shelter at the Summer Street at South Station stop will be removed to allow for a new South Station pedestrian ramp to be constructed.  The bus stop will remain active.  The construction of the ramp is scheduled to take approximately two weeks to complete.

Construction Activity Commences on Atlantic Avenue Next Week

Next week, Suffolk Construction, the contractor for the South Station Air Rights Project, will begin establishing a construction zone on Atlantic Avenue.  To establish this zone, the contractor will begin making curb cuts along Atlantic Avenue, which will involve temporary travel lane closures during off-peak hours (between 9:30 AM and 3:00 PM).  This will be the first activity for Stage 1 of construction for the South Station Air Rights Project.

During the process of making the curb cuts, the contractor will displace the cab parking in the curb cut zones, leaving approximately four spaces at the entrance to the station.  This work should take about five days to complete and will not occur over the weekend.  After the curb cuts are complete, the cab stand by the Atlantic Avenue entrance to South Station will be split into two areas to accommodate access to the construction zone throughout the project.  Signs indicating the new curb use will be posted on Atlantic Avenue.

Access to the South Station train platforms through the Atlantic Avenue entrance will be maintained during construction.
